The Story of Samuel

I first sought help at a shelter where I met a counselor who tried to assist me with housing and employment, but I didn’t have much luck. Then I was introduced to Better Way Detroit (BWD), which became a turning point for me.

At the time, I was struggling to navigate the aging process, both physically and mentally. When I was younger, I never thought about things like arthritis, calluses, or joint pain, but now they affect my ability to work. I wasn’t prepared for the challenges that come with age, and that realization was difficult.

BWD helped me in many ways, but most importantly, it gave me confidence. Before, I didn’t think I could work because of my health and age. But once I started participating in their program, I saw that I could still contribute. I completed the 12-day program, and even though we couldn’t immediately find a job, Fr. Marko stuck with me and eventually connected me with a grocery store.

That experience helped me manage the realities of aging—not just physically but mentally. I now have a strategy for handling these changes. I’ve started thinking about long-term goals, like applying for Social Security (SSI) while still working within my physical limits.

Right now, I’m working at a market and learning new skills. I also know that getting my license and a vehicle would give me more options and a different kind of confidence. Still, I have to remind myself that I’m no longer that young person—I need to approach life differently. That means taking care of my health, eating better, and managing the physical realities of aging.

Would I recommend Better Way Detroit to others? Absolutely. It builds confidence, fosters appreciation for others, and gives you a support network. It helped me immensely—especially by connecting me with steady employment, which has allowed me to secure housing. Now, I just need to keep pushing forward, staying motivated, and building a future that fits where I am in life today.
