The Story of Brandy

Brandy admits she didn’t know what to expect when she was recommended to Better Way. The single mother of a special needs 8-year-old daughter, she had a background in call center customer service, but was having a difficult time finding a job with hours that would allow her to be home with her daughter after school.

She and her daughter live in a family homeless shelter and it was the shelter’s employment coordinator who recommended her to Better Way. Through Better Way, Brandy was able to work for a stipend at the St. Vincent de Paul store and at the Capuchin kitchen with hours that were friendly to her domestic needs.

More importantly, she attended the resume building workshop through Better Way and applied for three jobs that fit her skill set and available hours. Then, she had a happy problem: “I was hired for all three!” says Brandy. She chose one with an insurance agency which was closer to her past work experience. She was also able to get a car. “I am checking things off my list,” she says, adding that a home of their own is next on her checklist.

“I walked into Better Way for the money, but walked out with so much more,” says Brandy. “I have a lifelong mentor, Quiane (Better Way’s operations manager) and Better Way has lifted me up.”
